Both have longstanding places in menswear, yet the distinction between them extends far beyond the number of buttons on the front. Each creates a different architecture through the jacket, influencing its lapels, proportions, balance and overall presence.
In bespoke tailoring, neither should be regarded simply as the more formal or more fashionable option. The better choice depends on the intended character of the garment, the cloth, the construction and, most importantly, how the proportions work with the wearer.
What Is a Single Breasted Jacket?
A single breasted jacket fastens with one vertical row of buttons, most commonly with one, two or three buttons at the front.
Because there is relatively little overlap between the two sides of the jacket, the front remains visually clean and open. This allows the lapels, shirt and tie to create a strong vertical relationship through the torso.
The two button single breasted jacket has become one of the most familiar configurations in modern tailoring, although one button and three button variations remain well established.

What Is a Double Breasted Jacket?
A double breasted jacket is defined by a wider overlapping front and two visible columns of buttons.
This additional overlap changes the geometry of the garment. More cloth travels across the torso, while the lapels generally extend further across the chest, creating stronger diagonal lines and a more pronounced visual structure.
Peak lapels are the traditional and most recognisable choice for double breasted tailoring.
One of the classic configurations is the 6x2: six visible buttons arranged in three rows, with two possible fastening positions on the working side. Other established configurations include the lower buttoning 6x1, as well as 4x2 and 4x1 variations.
Inside the jacket, a concealed fastening known as the jigger helps secure the underlapping front and keeps the jacket sitting correctly when worn.

The Importance of Button Placement
Button placement has a significant influence on the appearance of both jacket styles.
On a single breasted jacket, the fastening point helps determine the apparent length of the lapel and the balance between the upper and lower sections of the jacket.
A higher buttoning point creates a more contained front, while a lower fastening point produces a longer lapel line and a more open chest.
The same principle becomes particularly important in double breasted tailoring.
A traditional 6x2 configuration creates a balanced and immediately recognisable double breasted silhouette. A lower buttoning 6x1 arrangement can create a longer lapel line and a more dramatic, elongated appearance.
These details may appear subtle individually, but collectively they determine much of the character of a bespoke jacket.
Is Double Breasted More Formal?
There is no absolute hierarchy of formality between single breasted and double breasted jackets.
A double breasted suit can appear more pronounced or dressy because of its overlapping front, peak lapels and stronger visual structure. Historically, however, double breasted tailoring has appeared across business, leisure, sporting and formal dress.
The single breasted suit became more common in everyday business wear, but that does not automatically make it less formal.
A navy double breasted suit in a fine worsted wool can be entirely appropriate for business, while a softly constructed double breasted jacket in linen, hopsack or textured wool can feel distinctly relaxed.
Likewise, a sharply cut single breasted suit in a dark formal cloth can appear more refined than a casually constructed double breasted jacket. Formality is determined by the garment as a whole. Cloth, colour, construction, lapel treatment, shoulder line, button stance and styling all matter alongside the fastening.
Which Jacket Is More Flattering?
There is no universal rule that says one style suits a particular body type better than the other. Such rules often oversimplify the role of the cutter.
A double breasted jacket does introduce more cloth across the torso, but careful control of the overlap, button position, lapel width, jacket length and waist can create a remarkably clean and elongated line.
Similarly, a single breasted jacket can be proportioned to lengthen, broaden or visually balance the wearer. For a bespoke garment, the question should not simply be whether someone is tall, short, broad or slim. The more useful question is how the jacket should be proportioned around that individual.
Which Should You Choose?
For a first bespoke suit, a single breasted jacket is often the most versatile starting point.
Its clean front works naturally across business, weddings, travel and a wide range of social occasions. It also lends itself easily to different combinations of shirts, ties and separates.
A double breasted jacket offers a different kind of appeal.
Its stronger architecture and broader lapel treatment can give the wearer greater presence while remaining elegant when the proportions are carefully controlled.
It can be particularly compelling for someone who already owns several conventional suits and wants to introduce a more distinctive silhouette into the wardrobe.
Neither should be chosen because one is considered safer or more fashionable.
The decision should begin with the intended character of the garment.
